Willkommensbroschüre für Soldaten - U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach

5 Ansbach The former seat of the dukes of the House of Hohenzollern has left lasting marks on the city. The historical townscape and the baroque facades are giving the capital its representative look. When you stroll through the town, the impressive Orangery with its wide ranged Palace Garden, the well preserved synagogue and the ancient church of the dukes, all bear witness to the rich history of Ansbach. The best way to discover the city´s charm is listening to an enjoyable audio play which is leading you along the historic sites or to book an English guided tour with one of our city guides. In Ansbach we have many great events, such as the historic RococoFestival, the Old Town Festival and even celebrated the 800th anniversary of the city of Ansbach in 2021. Illesheim is first mentioned in a document in 1283. A total of four castles are said to have existed here. The history of Illesheim has been particularly influenced by the knighthood that once resided there. In particular, Eppelein von Gailingen, who was born in 1310 at Röllingshausen Castle near Illesheim, and the knight Götz von Berlichingen, who became world famous through Göthe, also had possessions in Illesheim. During the regional restructuring efforts in 1975 the towns of Urfersheim and Westheim became part of the Illesheim municipality. Since the withdrawal of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade in 2017, the Illesheim site has served as the main deployment base for “rotational units” (Atlantic Resolve Rotations) that are temporarily transferred from the U.S. to Europe. These units also operate from other bases, mainly in Eastern Central Europe and participate in multinational exercises there. For more than 80 years, the airfield and the barracks have been an integral part of the Illesheim community. Friendly relations and contacts have been maintained with our American guests for decades. The barracks are an important economic factor for the community. Substantial budget funds for the Illesheim municipality are generated here.
