26 Welcome to the U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr. 2018 January Secretary of the Army Dr. Mark T. Esper hosts a town hall forum at Tower Barracks Theater Grafenwoehr. 2019 October United Nations recognized the Federal Forestry Office Grafenwoehr, 7th Army Training Command and U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria for their efforts within the UN project declared “Decade on Biodiversity”, and recognized the team behind the project titled “Where red deer care for the landscape; open land management at Grafenwoehr”. November Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo visits Live-Fire Exercise with U.S. Army soldiers in Grafenwoehr and 2d Cavalry Regiment’s Reed Museum located on Rose Barracks in Vilseck. Pompeo served with the regiment during his time in the U.S. Army in the late 1980s while stationed at Merrell Barracks in Nürnberg. The 41st Field Artillery Brigade returned back to Germany after a 13 year long break and uncased its colors in an activation ceremony at Grafenwoehr. COVID 19 pandemic changed day-today operations at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria. Precautionary measures for the health protection of community members were implemented. 7th Army Training Command illuminates historical water tower with Bavarian-American crests. 2021 Although the COVID 19 pandemic continued to change how day-to-day operations were conducted within the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria footprint, training never stopped. Unlike other training areas in the United States or Europe that closed down during the pandemic, 7th Army Training Command continued conducting training and exercises in the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels training areas to ensure continued readiness of its U.S. Soldiers, Allies and Partners in Europe – while complying with host nation, U.S. DoD and DA, and CDC’s additional mitigation measures and restrictions. GTA camps also served as the required quarantine location for all of U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s rotational brigades who deployed to Europe during the pandemic. August In August 2021, 7th Army Training Command activated the Grafenwoehr Training Area camps during Operation Allies Refuge to serve as a temporary lodging location for EUCOM as part of the U.S. Department of State’s evacuation efforts from Afghanistan. No refugees or immigrants were ever housed on location nor transited through the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria footprint however. 2022 Bavarian Minister President Markus Soeder welcomed approximately 4,000 Soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division to Bavaria at Grafenwoehr Training Area as part of a U.S. President-directed deployment to Europe in response to Russian aggression History of the Grafenwoehr Training Area
