The Minister President’s visit expressed support for the two nations’ ongoing NATO partnership, and affirmed the 65-year friendship between German-Bavarians and American Soldiers. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, along with U.S. Ambassador to Germany Amy Gutmann, visited Grafenwoehr Training Area and thanked U.S. troops for their key contributions to the freedom and security of Germany and its NATO allies in Europe, paying tribute to the unity and resolve of the transatlantic partnership, and reaffirming Germany’s commitment to solidarity with fellow members of the Alliance. U.S. Department of Defense announced that U.S. Army will conduct training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The training on weapons platforms authorized under Presidential Drawdown Security Assistance packages was conducted by U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s 7th Army Training Command at U.S. ranges in Germany, under the oversight of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine who was relocated to Grafenwoehr. 2023 The U.S. Army expanded U.S.-led training efforts for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to include joint maneuver and combined arms operations training for battalions and brigades. Defense leaders including the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, and the U.S. Sergeant Major of the Army Michael A. Grinston visited Grafenwoehr Training Area to see the Armed Forces of Ukraine training and meet with U.S. trainers. Preparations for the Operational Readiness Training Complex (ORTC) at the Grafenwoehr Training Area started. ORTC will become a new, modern training campus for U.S. Army troops and NATO partners coming to Grafenwoehr for military training. Existing buildings, some from the 1950s in the Aachen and Algiers training camps on GTA will be replaced with new facilities. In addition to accommodation buildings for soldiers, motor pools, administration buildings, fitness centers and dining facilities, there will be also shopping facilities for daily use during the exercise stay.
