3 Cultural highlights in Ansbach The former seat of the dukes of the „House of Hohenzollern“ has left visible marks and landmarks in the city. You can feel the magic of the Rococo era when you walk around the town center and visit the Palace, our baroque synagoge or the church of St. Gumbertus. The best way to discover Ansbach’s charm and sites is joining a city tour with one of our wonderful guides. Please contact us to ask for a tour in English. We also offer tourist brochures and information about our wide range of annual events. The highlights during the year are the Rococo festival in the beginning of July, the Bachwoche Ansbach (every second year in August), the Kaspar Hauser festival (every other second year in August) the Green Night (every second year in September) and all of our markets like our Street Food market (Ansbacher Mess – Food & Feines) in spring. A must-see is definitely the Old Town festival (Altstadtfest), held every year in the beginning of June. You also have to experience the regional food, flowers and the unique flair in our market place every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The small shops and boutiques in the city center and at the shopping mall also offer interesting products and concepts like unpacked products to reduce packaging waste. Have a wonderful time and become one of us! Fränkisches Freilandmuseum des Bezirks Mittelfranken Eisweiherweg 1 · 91438 Bad Windsheim · Tel. 0 98 41/66 80 0 info@freilandmuseum.de · www.freilandmuseum.de A walk around the franconian open air museum is like travelling back in time through the past 700 years of rural life throughout Franconia. With about 130 historical buildings and 200.000 exhibits the museum represents a significant part of the cultural memory of the people of Franconia. To research, collect, conserve, interpret and exhibit tangible and intangible heritage are the central tasks of museums. That‘s why (and how) we move worlds: we move entire houses to our museum site. WE MOVE WORLDS Follow us on THE FRÄNKISCHES FREILANDMUSEUM DES BEZIRKS MITTELFRANKEN IN BAD WINDSHEIM IS LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR VISIT! Old varieties of grains, vegetables and fruits, that used to be grown in the region but are now rare and partly forgotten, are cultivated in fields and orchards. Some of the fields are even prepared with horse- or ox-drawn equipment. SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS, EVENTS & TRADITIONAL CRAFTS Whether first-time or regular visitor, the museum others new attractions all the time! Special exhibitions, concerts, talks, theatre, festivals and crafts demonstrations guarantee a varied and constantly changing programme of activities. The children’s festival, “Night at the Museum”, a summer fête, a harvest festival in autumn and the mediaval festival are some of the highlights. There’s always plenty going on to offer fun, entertainment and education to visitors of all ages! The museum also has a comprehensive and engaging education programme with guided tours on general or more specific topics, events and hands-on activities for all age groups and school types. These can be booked online and are also available in a choice of different languages, as well as the museum’s own publications and books in the giftshop. WALK FROM VILLAGE TO VILLAGE About 130 historical buildings from throughout Franconia (most of them furnished with authentic furniture from their period) are arranged in seven groups, representing different regions and themes. There are farmsteads, craftsmen’s cottages, shepherd’s huts, barns and stables, bakeries and breweries, four historic inns (serving refreshments and Franconian specialities!), even a school, a municipal building, a manor house and many more. The newest addition is a bathhouse from 1450. Currently under construction is a rural synagogue, which will be open to the public in 2023. So, walking around the museum site feels a bit like walking from village to village, as people would have done in the past. Of particular interest are the “Middle Ages” group and the “Town” group, located in Bad Windsheim’s old town, with the “Spitalkirche” (hospital church), the “Museum Kirche in Franken” – a permanent exhibition about the history of the Church in Franconia – the old “Bauhof” (timber yard) and the “Kräuter-Apotheke” with its exhibition of medicinal herbs. AUTHENTIC CROPS & LIVESTOCK Gardens, fields and meadows, hedgerows, vineyards and hop plantations, streams and creeks within the museum site recreate the traditional cultural landscape of Franconia. 5 Ansbach The former seat of the dukes of the House of Hohenzollern has left lasting marks on the city. The historical townscape and the baroque facades are giving the capital its representative look. When you stroll through the town, the impressive Orangery with its wide ranged Palace Garden, the well preserved synagogue and the ancient church of the dukes, all bear witness to the rich history of Ansbach. The best way to discover the city´s charm is listening to an enjoyable audio play which is leading you along the historic sites or to book an English guided tour with one of our city guides. In Ansbach we have many great events, such as the historic RococoFestival, the Old Town Festival and even celebrated the 800th anniversary of the city of Ansbach in 2021. Illesheim is first mentioned in a document in 1283. A total of four castles are said to have existed here. The history of Illesheim has been particularly influenced by the knighthood that once resided there. In particular, Eppelein von Gailingen, who was born in 1310 at Röllingshausen Castle near Illesheim, and the knight Götz von Berlichingen, who became world famous through Göthe, also had possessions in Illesheim. During the regional restructuring efforts in 1975 the towns of Urfersheim and Westheim became part of the Illesheim municipality. Since the withdrawal of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade in 2017, the Illesheim site has served as the main deployment base for “rotational units” (Atlantic Resolve Rotations) that are temporarily transferred from the U.S. to Europe. These units also operate from other bases, mainly in Eastern Central Europe and participate in multinational exercises there. For more than 80 years, the airfield and the barracks have been an integral part of the Illesheim community. Friendly relations and contacts have been maintained with our American guests for decades. The barracks are an important economic factor for the community. Substantial budget funds for the Illesheim municipality are generated here. 6 U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Ansbach consists of nine installations dispersed between the city of Ansbach and the town of Illesheim. Bismarck, Katterbach, Urlas, and Shipton Kasernes are located northeast of Ansbach while Barton Barracks and Bleidorn Kaserne are in the southwestern part of Ansbach. Storck Barracks is located in Illesheim while Franken Kaserne and Oberdachstetten Training Area are located about halfway between Ansbach and Illesheim, which are about 25 miles apart. USAG Ansbach is a U.S. Army Power Projection Platform and U.S. Army Europe’s strategic aviation platform. USAG Ansbach is home to the permanently based 12th Combat Aviation Brigade and the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. Additionally in 2023, the 7th Engineer Brigade Headquarters and the 1st Battalion of the 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment moved into the Ansbach footprint. The garrison also supports rotational aviation forces in support of Atlantic Resolve as a demonstration of the United States’ commitment to the collective security of Europe in cooperation with NATO Allies and partner nations. Throughout the garrison and the surrounding communities, you’ll find that people are friendly and willing to lend a helping hand. The local Ansbach people are friendly and happy to assist you when you are in the local area and downtown. Don’t be afraid to ask. Many of them speak English but also appreciate your efforts to speak German! We also have wonderful schools here in Ansbach, with a full staff of teachers and various faculty members that ensure that your children receive a top-notch education. Strong communities are built on strong schools; the small size of our schools combined with the caring nature of those who work in them means that children receive personalized help in learning and in dealing with issues such as the challenges of living overseas and the deployment of parents. The area also offers families plenty of exciting events and travel opportunities in which to experience German culture and hospitality. We encourage you to take advantage of our location in the center of Europe and Germany to venture out, may it be day trips to close destinations such as Nuremberg, Bamberg, Munich, and of course the famous Rothenburg o. d. Tauber, which is only a thirty-minute drive from Ansbach or use your free time to travel across Europe. The Czech Republic and Austria, for example are only a couple of hours away!
